Sunday, Nov. 10 – International (Big-Board) Checkers
Top Master Charlie Williams, Louisville, Ky., won the 21st Annual
Pool Checker tourney in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019.
Charlie was only 5th seed by the numerical ratings of the South Bend series,
but edged out top-rated Clorius Lay ("The Mongoose") of Gary, Ind. Lay won
their head-to-head match with a win and a draw, but Williams won more against
the other players and squeaked out the victory by just a single point, the
width of one draw. The attendance of 9 was a nice increase over last year.
The weekend's events were dedicated to the memory of Top Master Orlando
"Panama" Williams, Chicago, who passed away earlier this year. Special
thanks to Mrs. Linda Bell for bringing in excellent food for the players to
celebrate Arthur "Sonny" Bell's birthday. Sonny had been in the
hospital in September, so the celebration was postponed until November.

Vern Cloud, Buchanan, Mich., was the winner in International or 10 x 10
checkers the next day, Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019. This tourney was also a
squeaker, as Vern defeated Arthur Bell in the final game to finish just one
draw ahead of General Owens, Chicago. Roger Blaine was the organizer and
director of the Checker Festival.
